5 Things worth the money - Pregnancy edition
A recent TikTok trend got me thinking about the items and services that are actually worth investing in during pregnancy. While everyone has different needs, these are the five things I recommend most often as a birth doula.
5 Things Worth the Money - Pregnancy Edition
If there's one investment I'd encourage every expecting family to consider, it's hiring a doula (yes, I'm a little biased!). Doulas provide continuous emotional, physical, and educational support throughout pregnancy, labor, and the early postpartum period. Everything I teach is grounded in evidence-based education and training. Research has shown that doula support is associated with lower stress, greater confidence, and improved birth experiences.
Whether it's through your doula, a local birth center, hospital, or health department, I highly encourage every expecting parent to take a childbirth education class. Birth is unpredictable, but understanding what is happening in your body—and knowing your options—can help you feel more prepared and confident. Every year we learn more about pregnancy and birth, so having up-to-date, evidence-based information is invaluable.
I have tried to convince one of my best friends, an amazing physical therapist, to specialize in pelvic floor therapy—but no luck yet! Pelvic floor physical therapy isn't just for postpartum recovery. It can be incredibly beneficial during pregnancy by helping reduce pelvic pain, back pain, and other discomforts as your body changes. It can also help prepare your body for birth and support a smoother recovery afterward.
One of the first recommendations you'll likely receive after finding out you're pregnant is to start taking a prenatal vitamin. Not all prenatal vitamins contain the same nutrients, so talk with your healthcare provider about which one is best for you. Prenatal vitamins help support your baby's development while also helping replenish the nutrients your own body needs throughout pregnancy. Important nutrients often include folate, choline, iron, vitamin D, and vitamin B12, depending on your individual needs.
One of the simplest purchases that can make a big difference is a pregnancy pillow. With so many shapes and sizes available, there's likely one that fits your sleeping style. As your belly grows, finding a comfortable position becomes more challenging. Many providers recommend side sleeping later in pregnancy, particularly on the left side when comfortable. A pregnancy pillow can help support your belly, hips, knees, and back so you can get the rest your body needs.
